About this person
Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, born 19 June 1964, studied at Eton and Oxford, where he was elected president of the Oxford Union in 1986. He started writing for The Daily Telegraph in 1989 and edited The Spectator from 1999 to 2005 before entering Parliament as MP for Henley in 2001. After a dismissal from Michael Howard's Shadow Cabinet over lying about an affair, he won the London mayoralty in 2008, served two terms, then returned to the Commons in 2015 for Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He became a leading voice in the 2016 Brexit campaign, served as Theresa May's foreign secretary until resigning in protest in 2018, then won the Conservative leadership in 2019. As prime minister he prorogued Parliament unlawfully, called a snap election that delivered him a landslide, and took the UK out of the EU in January 2020.
