About

Born David Grün in Płońsk, Congress Poland, in 1886, he immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906 and adopted the name Ben-Gurion three years later. He rose to lead the Jewish community in British-ruled Mandatory Palestine from 1935 and became executive head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. The 1948 Arab–Israeli War, which followed his declaration of statehood, saw him unite Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces, secure victory over the Arab League, and preside over the expulsion and flight of a majority of the Palestinian Arab population.
