Born David Grün in Płońsk, Congress Poland, in 1886, he immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906 and adopted the name Ben-Gurion three years later. He rose to lead the Jewish community in British-ruled Mandatory Palestine from 1935 and became executive head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946.
