About this person
Born 5 November 1963, Lapid spent his pre-politics years as an author and news presenter before founding Yesh Atid in 2012. The party stunned observers by taking 19 seats in its debut election in 2013, making it the second-largest bloc and earning Lapid the finance portfolio under Netanyahu from 2013 to 2014. He became Opposition Leader in May 2020, then in June 2021 brokered a rotation deal with Naftali Bennett that ended Netanyahu's long run and installed Bennett as prime minister with Lapid as alternate prime minister and foreign minister. When Bennett stepped down and the Knesset dissolved, Lapid took over on 1 July 2022 and held the role for 181 days - until the November election seated a new government. He returned to Opposition Leader in January 2023, and in April 2026 Yesh Atid joined Bennett's new alliance, Together.
