He broke Netanyahu's grip on Israeli politics by assembling a coalition no one thought possible - eight fractious parties spanning hard right to Arab-Israeli - and held the prime minister's chair for exactly one year before the whole thing collapsed.

About this person

Born in Haifa in 1972 to American immigrants, Bennett served in elite IDF units before making two tech fortunes: Cyota sold for $145 million in 2005, Soluto for up to $130 million in 2013. He entered politics in 2006 as Netanyahu's chief of staff, later led the Yesha Council, and in 2012 took over The Jewish Home, a religious Zionist party that won 12 seats in 2013. He served as education minister and defense minister under Netanyahu, left to form the New Right in 2018, and led the Yamina alliance to 7 seats in 2021. That June he struck a rotation deal with Yair Lapid, becoming prime minister on 13 June 2021. The coalition unraveled a year later; Bennett announced dissolution in June 2022, handed power to Lapid in July, served briefly as alternate prime minister, then resigned in November. He stayed out of the next election and returned in 2025 with a new party, forming an alliance with Lapid called Together in 2026.
