About this person
Gantz rose to the top of the Israel Defense Forces, serving as Chief of General Staff from 2011 to 2015. Three years after leaving the military, he launched Israel Resilience, which merged with other parties to form Blue and White and positioned itself against Benjamin Netanyahu. In April 2020, after three inconclusive elections, he broke with his coalition partners and agreed to a rotation deal that made him alternate prime minister and defense minister, with a promise to take the premiership in late 2021. The government collapsed before the handover. Reappointed defense minister under the Bennett-Lapid coalition in 2021, he held the role until December 2022. When war broke out in Gaza in October 2023, his National Unity party entered a war cabinet with Netanyahu's Likud. Eight months later, Gantz and his ally Gadi Eisenkot walked out, and the war cabinet dissolved four days after that.
