Heche came up through daytime soap, winning an Emmy for playing twins on Another World in the late 1980s. By 1997 she was working steadily in Hollywood - Donnie Brasco, Volcano, I Know What You Did Last Summer - and the next year she led Six Days, Seven Nights and a Psycho remake. She directed for HBO, earned a Tony nomination for the 2004 Broadway revival of Twentieth Century, and kept a run of supporting roles going through the 2010s. But the split from DeGeneres in 2000 triggered a public breakdown, and in 2001 she published Call Me Crazy, detailing sexual abuse by her father. She worked another two decades - Everwood, Men in Trees, a stint on Dancing with the Stars - before the August 2022 car crash in Los Angeles. She died six days later at 53.
