Anthony Robin McMillan took the stage name Robbie Coltrane and cut his teeth in British sketch comedy alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson in Alfresco and The Comic Strip. His 1987 turn in the BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti earned his first BAFTA nomination, but it was Cracker - the ITV crime drama where he starred as criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald from 1993 to 1996 - that made him a national figure and brought him the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor three years running. From 2001 to 2011, he became Rubeus Hagrid across all eight Harry Potter films, a role that carried him to worldwide recognition. Along the way he played a Russian gangster in two James Bond films, voiced animated characters from The Gruffalo to Pixar's Brave, and in 2016 earned a fourth BAFTA nomination for his raw performance as a disgraced comedian in National Treasure. He was appointed an OBE in 2006 and died in October 2022.
