Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born 15 April 1990 and trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts. Landing Hermione Granger as a child launched her into the Harry Potter juggernaut, and by the time the final film wrapped she was already testing other ground: Ballet Shoes in 2007, The Tale of Despereaux in 2008. After Potter ended she took smaller parts - My Week with Marilyn in 2011 - before breaking through as the flirtatious Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower in 2012, then Alexis Neiers in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring and a supporting turn in Darren Aronofsky's Noah, both in 2013 and 2014. That same stretch she split time with Brown University, graduating with a degree in English literature in May 2014, and was named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to help launch the HeForShe campaign. She played Belle in the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast and Meg March in Greta Gerwig's Little Women in 2019. By the 2010s Forbes and Vanity Fair ranked her among the highest-paid actresses in the world, and in 2015 Time named her one of its 100 most influential people.
