He was eleven when he put on the glasses, and by the time he took them off a decade later the films had made $8.38 billion worldwide. The question after Harry Potter is always the same: can you become someone else when the world already decided who you are?

I'm very proud of being Jewish. It means I have a good work ethic, and you get Jewish humour and you're allowed to tell Jewish jokes.

About this person
Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born 23 July 1989 in England, and in 2001 he became Harry Potter - all eight films through 2011, a commitment that ran from childhood into his twenties. The pivot came in 2007 when he took Equus to the West End and Broadway, playing a troubled stable boy in a role far from Hogwarts. He kept the stage work coming: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 2011 earned him a Grammy nomination, The Cripple of Inishmaan in 2014, the Stoppard and Beckett revivals in London, and Merrily We Roll Along in 2023, which won him a Tony Award and another Grammy nod. The film choices ran deliberately strange - The Woman in Black, Swiss Army Man as a flatulent corpse, Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, "Weird Al" Yankovic in a musical parody that brought Emmy and BAFTA nominations. He's been with actress Erin Darke since 2012; they have a son.
