About this person
Russell Edward Brand (born 4 June 1975) came up through British stand-up and radio, landing Big Brother's Big Mouth on E4 before breaking into film with St Trinian's (2007) and the Hollywood comedies Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, and Arthur. Early notoriety came from drug use, a prank call controversy that drove him out of the BBC, and an MTV dismissal - tabloid fuel that shadowed three British Comedy Awards and a BAFTA nomination. By 2013 he'd pivoted sharply: guest-editing New Statesman, launching the political web series The Trews, writing Revolution, activism on wealth inequality and corporate power. During COVID his YouTube channel surged in followers and swung toward conspiracy theories and COVID denialism. In September 2023 a joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches brought five women forward with allegations of sexual assault and abuse between 2006 and 2013; a sixth alleged an assault in 2003. Brand denied everything and claimed conspiracy.
