Spanish association football player
The goalkeeper who played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid — and won with each. Zamora moved between Spain's bitterest rivals in an era when loyalty was fluid and the Clásico was still finding its shape.
Born 21 January 1901, Ricardo Zamora Martínez came up as a goalkeeper in Catalonia, turning out for RCD Espanyol before crossing to FC Barcelona. He later made the rare leap to Real Madrid, wearing the white shirt in a career that spanned Spain's feuding giants. He earned caps for the national team and, after hanging up the gloves, turned to management. Leading Atlético Aviación — the wartime incarnation of Atlético Madrid — he delivered two La Liga titles. He briefly took charge of Spain before his death on 8 September 1978.
