3rd pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt
Third pharaoh of Egypt's Twentieth Dynasty, he waited through his father's three-decade reign — inheriting the throne at 21 only after his older brother died at 15. Six years later, he was gone.
Ramesses IV was the second son of Ramesses III, never meant to rule. When his elder brother Amenherkhepshef died in 1164 BC, the 12-year-old was suddenly crown prince. His titles piled up — Hereditary Prince, Royal Scribe, Generalissimo — and by Year 27 of his father's reign he was appointing high priests, doing the work of kingship before he had the crown. Ramesses III held the throne for 31 years. When he finally died, his son was 21. Ramesses IV ruled from 1155 to 1149 BC: six and a half years, then nothing.
