A pharaoh who ruled Egypt over three thousand years ago and whose preserved body now sits behind glass in Cairo — one of the few ancient rulers whose actual face you can still see.

Biography

About

Ramesses V was the fourth pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt, son of Ramesses IV and Duatentopet. He inherited the throne during a period when Egypt's New Kingdom power was already in long decline. His reign was brief and left little mark on the archaeological record. What endures is his mummy, which survived the millennia of tomb robbery and reburial that scattered most royal remains. Today it rests on display at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, where visitors confront the actual preserved features of a man who once commanded the Nile.
