About this person

Born 26 September 1965, Poroshenko built a fortune in confectionery and media before rotating through cabinet posts - foreign affairs, trade, central bank chief. He won the presidency in May 2014 with 55% in the first round, inheriting a country at war. That summer and fall he clawed back most of the Donbas from separatists, then signed the Minsk agreements in September 2014 and February 2015, freezing the lines and sharply cutting casualties. He pushed Ukraine toward Europe - signing the Association Agreement in June 2014, securing visa-free travel in 2017 - and poured resources into reconstructing a hollowed-out army. His domestic program crystallized in a slogan, armiia, mova, vira: military, language, faith. In 2018 he midwifed the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine, breaking it from Moscow. Zelenskyy beat him decisively in 2019. He now leads the European Solidarity party in parliament, forced to sell his TV channel under anti-oligarch laws, and polls as an above-average president in retrospect.
