Born 27 November 1960, Tymoshenko rose through Ukraine's energy sector to become First Deputy Prime Minister for fuel and energy from 1999 to 2001. She co-led the Orange Revolution and served as prime minister from January to September 2005, then again from December 2007 to March 2010 - the first woman to hold the office. In 2010 she lost the presidential runoff to Viktor Yanukovych by 3.5 points. From 2011 to 2014 she was jailed in what many saw as politically motivated persecution; the Revolution of Dignity freed her after three years, and both Ukraine's Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights later cleared her. She ran for president again in 2014, finishing second to Petro Poroshenko, then came third in 2019 with 13.40% and missed the runoff. Leader of the Batkivshchyna party since its founding, she's been in parliament several times since 1997 and backs Ukraine's path to the EU and NATO while opposing Russia's Eurasian orbit.
