About this person

Born in Kryvyi Rih in 1978 into a Russian-speaking Jewish family, Zelenskyy studied law but chose comedy instead, co-founding the production company Kvartal 95. His TV series Servant of the People, which ran from 2015 to 2019, cast him as an accidental president - immensely popular, it gave its name to the political party he formed in March 2018. Running as an anti-establishment, anti-corruption candidate, he won the 2019 election with 73.23 percent of the vote, the biggest landslide in Ukrainian presidential history. His early presidency focused on e-government, limiting parliamentary immunity, and attempts to end the Donbas war through the Minsk agreements and dialogue with Putin. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, Zelenskyy declined evacuation offers, declared martial law, and mobilized the armed forces. He has since visited frontlines repeatedly, addressed legislatures worldwide, and pressed for military aid and sanctions. Time named him Person of the Year for 2022. Martial law has extended his term indefinitely, making him Ukraine's second-longest-serving president.
