Born 9 July 1950, Yanukovych rose through Donetsk politics as governor from 1997, joined the pro-Russian Party of Regions, and reached for the presidency in 2004. Declared the winner against Viktor Yushchenko, he watched the result collapse under fraud allegations and mass protest — the Orange Revolution — forcing a rerun he lost. He returned in 2010, this time defeating Yulia Tymoshenko in an election international observers called clean. His presidency saw Tymoshenko jailed, press freedom erode, and cronyism deepen.
