Bavarian aristocrat (1808-1892)
She gave birth to one of Europe's most restless empresses, then watched from Munich as her daughter's legend outgrew the palace that raised them both.
Maria Ludovika Wilhelmine was born in Munich on 30 August 1808, the fifth child of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and his second wife Queen Caroline. She spent her life in the city where she was born, a Bavarian royal by blood but never by crown. Her daughter, Elisabeth, would marry into the Austrian imperial family and become one of the century's most talked-about women. Ludovika died in Munich on 25 January 1892, her name preserved less by her own deeds than by the daughter who couldn't stay still.
