Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria was born on 4 December 1808 into a junior branch of the House of Wittelsbach, the family that ruled Bavaria. While his royal cousins wore crowns, he spent his energy promoting Bavarian folk music - a passion far removed from the usual aristocratic pursuits. His real mark on history came through his children: his daughter Elisabeth married into the Habsburg throne and became Empress of Austria, known to the world as "Sisi." He died on 15 November 1888, having also set a quieter legacy in motion - he was great-grandfather to King Leopold III of Belgium.
