Bavarian Royal (1808–1888)
A Bavarian duke who loved folk music more than court protocol, remembered now mostly because his daughter became the most famous empress in Europe.
Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria was born on 4 December 1808 into a junior branch of the House of Wittelsbach, the family that ruled Bavaria. While his royal cousins wore crowns, he spent his energy promoting Bavarian folk music — a passion far removed from the usual aristocratic pursuits. His real mark on history came through his children: his daughter Elisabeth married into the Habsburg throne and became Empress of Austria, known to the world as "Sisi." He died on 15 November 1888, having also set a quieter legacy in motion — he was great-grandfather to King Leopold III of Belgium.
