Born in 795, Lothair was the firstborn of Emperor Louis I and positioned as heir to the Carolingian throne. He became co-emperor with his father in 817 and King of Italy a year earlier, but the arrival of a half-brother—Charles the Bald—threatened the tidy succession. Lothair rallied his full brothers Pepin I and Louis the German in repeated revolts against their father to block Charles from the inheritance.
