A pregnant widow who refused to cede her late father's throne, she sparked a civil war to secure her infant son's inheritance — and died at 33 before seeing it through.
Elizabeth of Luxembourg was born on 7 October 1409, the only child of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia. After her father's death, she and her husband Albert II were elected by the Hungarian estates as de facto equal rulers, though she couldn't fully claim her crown when the Veszprém bishop blocked the ceremony over protocol. She was nonetheless recognised as co-ruler and took an active part in government. Albert died in 1439, leaving her pregnant with two daughters already born.
