A Habsburg who collected crowns by marriage and inheritance — Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia, King of the Romans — then spent his brief reign fighting wars he mostly lost, from the Hussites to the Ottomans, and died in the field at forty-two.
Born in 1397, Albert V inherited the Austrian duchies and married Elizabeth of Luxembourg, which brought him the thrones of Hungary, Bohemia, and Croatia along with a claim to Luxembourg. He threw himself into the Hussite Wars alongside his father-in-law Sigismund, suffering defeat at Domažlice in 1431 and backing brutal persecutions of Hussites and Jews — including the 1420 Vienna pogrom and waves of expulsions and taxation.
