Biography

About

Sigismund of Luxembourg was born 15 February 1368, son of Charles IV, and married Mary, Queen of Hungary in 1385, becoming King of Hungary after her coronation. When Mary died in 1395, he ruled alone, having fought to secure authority over a restive throne. In 1396 he led the Crusade of Nicopolis and was crushed by the Ottomans; afterward he founded the Order of the Dragon and added Croatia, Germany, and Bohemia to his holdings. He drove the Council of Constance (1414–1418) that closed the papal schism, but the council also ignited the Hussite Wars that dominated his later years. Crowned Holy…
