King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia (1506–1526)
He was twenty when he inherited three crowns, and dead at twenty-six — drowned in armor fleeing the field where his kingdom broke. The Battle of Mohács didn't just kill Louis II; it opened Hungary to Ottoman rule for a century and a half.
Born 1 July 1506, Louis became King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia in 1516 while still a boy. A decade later, on 29 August 1526, he led his forces against Suleiman the Magnificent at Mohács in southern Hungary. The Ottomans crushed the Hungarian army in under two hours. Louis died during the battle — most accounts say he drowned trying to cross a stream, weighed down by his armor. With him went the last independent Hungarian king for centuries, and the Ottomans annexed much of the kingdom that afternoon.
