Pau Gasol came out of Barcelona and landed in Memphis in 2001, the third pick in the draft and the first non-American to win Rookie of the Year the next season. He spent six years building the Grizzlies' foundation before the 2008 trade to Los Angeles changed everything - back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010 playing off Kobe Bryant, the kind of skilled, cerebral power forward the league was just learning to value. He kept moving after that: Chicago, San Antonio, Milwaukee, 18 seasons total. Internationally he collected hardware few Americans ever see - a World Cup, three EuroBasket titles, two EuroBasket MVPs, all-time leading EuroBasket scorer, and three Olympic medals with Spain. The Naismith Hall of Fame took him in 2023, the older Gasol brother who opened the door his younger sibling Marc would later walk through.
