He ruled the Ottoman Empire for barely a year, swept into power by a coup and swept out the same way — one of the briefest, bloodiest reigns in the dynasty's six-hundred-year run.

Biography

About

Born on 8 September 1779 into the Ottoman imperial house, Mustafa came to the throne in 1807 amid palace intrigue and military revolt. His sultanate lasted only months, a precarious interlude in an empire convulsing with reform struggles and janissary resistance. By 1808 he was deposed, and on 16 November of that year he was dead at twenty-nine — another sultan consumed by the machinery he'd briefly commanded.
