Byzantine emperor
A Byzantine finance minister who overthrew an empress, ruled for nine years, then died invading Bulgaria — where the victorious khan reportedly turned his skull into a drinking cup.
Nikephoros rose through the imperial bureaucracy as General Logothete, the empire's finance minister, under Empress Irene. In 802 he moved against her and seized the throne. His reign balanced campaigns on two fronts: against the Arabs in the east and the Bulgarians in the north, with mixed results. On 26 July 811, leading an army deep into Bulgarian territory, he met disaster at the Battle of Pliska. He was killed in the fighting, becoming one of the few Byzantine emperors to die in battle.
