Byzantine emperor from 695 to 698
He seized the Byzantine throne by overthrowing the emperor who'd jailed him for losing a battle — then lost it three years later to one of his own officers, who cut off his nose and tongue before locking him in a monastery to wait for execution.
Born in Isauria, Leontius rose to patrikios and strategos of the Anatolic Theme under Constantine IV, winning battles against the Umayyads and forcing their caliph to negotiate peace. In 692 Justinian II sent him to campaign again, but this time he was crushed at Sebastopolis and thrown in prison for the failure. Released in 695 and appointed strategos of Hellas, he immediately turned on Justinian, led a rebellion, and took the throne.
