Michael John Douglas adopted the stage name Keaton and spent the early eighties in broad comedies like Night Shift and Mr. Mom before Tim Burton cast him as Batman in 1989, a choice that drew ridicule until the film opened. He returned for Batman Returns in 1992, then left the franchise and drifted through the nineties in supporting turns and voice work. Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman in 2014 reframed his entire arc: playing a faded superhero actor clawing for legitimacy, Keaton earned his first Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe.
