Emily Jean Stone grew up doing community theater in Arizona before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager, breaking through in comedies like Superbad and Zombieland before Easy A in 2010 gave her a first lead. She cycled through rom-coms and the Spider-Man franchise as Gwen Stacy, then pivoted hard: a recovering addict in Birdman earned her a Supporting Actress nod in 2014, and La La Land delivered her first Oscar in 2016. A string of collaborations with Yorgos Lanthimos followed - The Favourite, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, Bugonia - the second of which won her a second statue and a Best Picture nomination as producer. She founded the production company Fruit Tree with her husband Dave McCary in 2020, starred as Sally Bowles on Broadway, and led two dark-comedy limited series while playing Billie Jean King and Cruella de Vil on the side.
