Aragonés spent most of his playing years at Atlético Madrid, scoring 123 goals across 265 Primera Liga matches between 1964 and 1974, anchoring a side that won four national championships and reached the 1974 European Cup Final. He also turned out for Real Madrid and earned eleven Spain caps. After hanging up his boots he worked the dugout at eight La Liga clubs, most often back at Atlético, before taking the national-team job.
