Born 9 May 1945, Josef Heynckes spent his playing peak as a striker in Borussia Mönchengladbach's golden run through the 1960s and '70s, collecting national championships, a DFB-Pokal, and a UEFA Cup as the club dominated German football. He remains the fourth-highest scorer in Bundesliga history with 220 goals. The 1977 European Cup final, Mönchengladbach's only appearance, ended in defeat to Liverpool.
