He co-founded Studio Ghibli and directed Grave of the Fireflies, one of the most devastating war films ever made in any medium. His work sits in Miyazaki's shadow for most audiences, but among animation directors his formal control and emotional precision are studied like scripture.
Born in Ujiyamada in 1935, Takahata joined Toei Animation after university in 1959 and spent years as an assistant director before helming The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun in 1968. He partnered with Hayao Miyazaki through the seventies, directing television series like Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Anne of Green Gables, then collaborated on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky before forming Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki in 1985.
