Born in Stockholm in 1915 to a Swedish father and German mother, Bergman started in Swedish and German films before her English-language remake of Intermezzo introduced her to U.S. audiences in 1939. The 1940s brought Casablanca, three Hitchcock collaborations, and a Best Actress Oscar for Gaslight, but in 1950 her affair with Roberto Rossellini and a pregnancy before marriage ignited a scandal that kept her in Europe for years.
