About this person
Liv Johanne Ullmann was born 16 December 1938 in Norway and became one of European cinema's most fearless performers. Her collaboration with Ingmar Bergman began with Persona in 1966 and continued through The Passion of Anna, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, and Autumn Sonata - films that leaned hard on her ability to let a camera see everything. She earned two Oscar nominations, for The Emigrants in 1972 and Bergman's Face to Face, and won a Golden Globe for the former. Later she moved behind the camera: her 2000 film Faithless competed for the Palme d'Or. In March 2022 the Academy gave her an honorary Oscar for what they called "bravery and emotional transparency" - a clinical way of saying she never hid.
