Queen consort during England's most catastrophic rupture, forced into exile when Parliament beheaded her husband and left her broke in Paris. Her Catholicism made her toxic at home, but an entire American colony still carries her name.
Henrietta Maria became Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland when she married Charles I on 13 June 1625, though her Roman Catholicism barred her from coronation and made her deeply unpopular. She plunged into politics as civil war tore the kingdoms apart, but in 1644, just after giving birth to her youngest daughter during the fighting, she fled to France. Charles I's execution on 30 January 1649 left her impoverished in Paris.
