A princess born into a civil war who grew up a refugee at Versailles, Henrietta of England brokered the secret alliance between her brother Charles II and her cousin Louis XIV—and died mysteriously weeks after signing it, at 26.
Born 16 June 1644 as the youngest child of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, she fled England as an infant when civil war tore the kingdom apart. Raised at the French court of her cousin Louis XIV, where she was called Minette, she married Philippe d'Orléans and became Duchess of Orléans—a union strained by jealousies over shared suitors. In June 1670 she negotiated the Secret Treaty of Dover, binding France and England against the Dutch Republic. She died suddenly on 30 June, the same month the treaty was signed.
