Giovanni Rivera started at Alessandria in 1959, then joined AC Milan a year later at sixteen. Over the next nineteen years he won three Serie A titles and two European Cups, captaining the side for twelve seasons. He collected 60 caps for Italy across four World Cups, scored the decisive goal against West Germany in extra time in the 1970 semi-final, then lost the final to Brazil 4–1.
