Born Temüjin around 1162, the son of a Mongol chieftain, he was eight when his father died and his family was cast out by their tribe into near-poverty. He killed his half-brother Behter to secure his position, then spent years forging alliances and surviving betrayals on the steppe - suffering a crushing defeat around 1187 before reemerging in 1196 to rapidly consolidate power. By 1206, after defeating his former ally Jamukha and the Naiman tribe, he stood alone as ruler of the Mongol tribes and took the title Genghis Khan. He reformed the Mongols into a meritocratic war machine, then launched campaigns that captured the Jin capital Zhongdu in 1215, toppled the Khwarazmian Empire, and sent expeditions as far as Georgia and Kievan Rus'. He died in August 1227 while subduing a rebellion, leaving an empire that would outlast him and a legacy split cleanly: in Mongolia he is the founding father; in Russia and the Arab world, a savage destroyer.
