Spanish footballer (1933–2022)
A winger so fast they named him after a storm — the Gale of the Cantabrian Sea — who won six European Cups with Real Madrid, a record that still stands alone.
Francisco "Paco" Gento started at Racing Santander in 1952 and moved to Real Madrid a year later, where speed down the left flank became his signature. Over the next decade and a half he appeared in eight European Cup finals, winning six of them, and collected 12 La Liga titles — both records. He earned 43 caps for Spain, playing at the 1962 and 1966 World Cups. When Alfredo Di Stéfano died in 2014, Real Madrid appointed Gento Honorary President. He died in January 2022, having been named by IFFHS the greatest Spanish footballer of the 20th century.
