Born 17 July 1944, Torres played as an attacking right-back, a technically gifted defender who could carry the ball forward and take penalties with precision. He captained Brazil to victory in the 1970 World Cup, scoring the fourth goal in the final — a strike widely considered among the greatest in tournament history. Pelé named him to the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players in 2004, and he was inducted into both the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame and the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame.
