Born in 1959, Ancelotti started as a midfielder with Parma before moving to Roma, where he won a Serie A title and four Coppa Italia trophies. He joined Milan in the late 1980s and won two European Cups as a player, plus two Scudetti. He earned 26 caps for Italy and finished third at the 1990 World Cup. As a manager, he took over Milan in 2001 and won the 2002–03 Champions League and a Scudetto with a record 82 points, then added another Champions League in 2007.
