English footballer (1924-1994)
The first footballer in the world to reach 100 international caps, and England's captain for 90 of his 105 appearances — a mark of durability and trust that defined an era when one-club careers and unbroken runs still meant something.
William Ambrose Wright was born on 6 February 1924 and spent his entire club career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, never moving. Playing centre-back, he became a fixture for England, captaining them through three World Cups: 1950, 1954, and 1958. His 70 consecutive international appearances set a record that stood until Spain's Andoni Zubizarreta broke it decades later. He died on 3 September 1994, having never worn another club's shirt.
