Anthony Burgess

John Anthony Burgess Wilson was born 25 February 1917 in England and became a writer who worked primarily in comic modes. A Clockwork Orange, his dystopian satire, remains his best-known novel, though he produced dozens more — the Enderby quartet, Earthly Powers, librettos, screenplays including the 1977 mini-series Jesus of Nazareth. He worked as a literary critic for The Observer and The Guardian, wrote studies of James Joyce, lectured in phonetics, and translated Cyrano de Bergerac, Oedipus Rex, and Carmen.
