John Dryden was born on 9 August 1631 and built a career across poetry, criticism, translation, and plays that gave him a grip on English letters few have matched. In 1668 he became England's first official Poet Laureate, a role that cemented his position at the centre of the literary world. His influence ran so deep that contemporaries and successors stopped calling the period "Restoration England" in print and started calling it the Age of Dryden. Walter Scott later tagged him "Glorious John". He died on 1 May 1700, leaving behind a body of work that had redrawn the boundaries of English verse and prose.
