About

Born in Buenos Aires in 1936 to an Italian family, Jorge Mario Bergoglio joined the Jesuits in 1958 after a brush with serious illness and rose to lead the order's Argentine province through the 1970s. He became archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, cardinal in 2001, and on 13 March 2013 — after Benedict XVI resigned — emerged from conclave as the first Jesuit and first Latin American pope, taking the name Francis after the saint of Assisi.
