About

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago in 1955, he became an Augustinian friar in 1977 and was ordained five years later. After earning a Doctor of Canon Law in Rome in 1987, he spent the late '80s and '90s doing missionary work across Peru—parish pastor, seminary teacher, diocesan administrator. Elected prior general of the Augustinians in 2001, he spent twelve years traveling the order's global network from a Rome base, then returned to Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. Pope Francis brought him back to Rome in 2023 as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and made him a cardinal. Two years…
