About this person

Born in Beijing in 1953, son of a revolutionary who was later purged, Xi spent years as a teenager in a rural cave dwelling during the Cultural Revolution before joining the Party and studying chemical engineering. He climbed provincial posts in Fujian, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, keeping a low profile until joining the Politburo Standing Committee in 2007. Taking power in 2012, he launched a vast anti-corruption drive that felled high officials, restructured the military, imposed zero-COVID lockdowns until the 2022 white paper protests, and cracked down on tech, real estate, and tutoring firms while expanding state control. His foreign policy pushed hard in the South China Sea and along the Indian border, built the Belt and Road across continents, and saw relations with Taiwan sour and Hong Kong's opposition crushed under the 2020 security law. In 2018 he rewrote the constitution to stay in power indefinitely, and in 2023 began a third term - the first Chinese president to do so.
