Władysław Reymont

Born into an impoverished noble family on 7 May 1867, Reymont was trained as a tailor but worked as a railway gateman and later an actor before turning to writing. His travels fed short stories rooted in realism, and in 1899 The Promised Land brought him acclaim for its unflinching look at Łódź — its poverty, labour exploitation, and the human cost of runaway industrialization. A severe railway accident in 1900 stopped him cold until 1904, when he began publishing Chłopi, the sweeping agrarian epic that would define his legacy.
