Greek poet and diplomat (1900-1971)
A Greek diplomat who spent decades in foreign service and somehow became one of the century's essential poets — then won the Nobel Prize for it.
Georgios Seferiadis was born in 1900 and adopted the pen name Giorgos Seferis early in his writing life. He built a parallel career in the Greek Foreign Service, moving through postings while publishing poetry that would reshape modern Greek literature. By the mid-20th century he was recognized as one of Greece's most important poets, a reputation that carried him to ambassadorial rank. From 1957 to 1962 he served as Ambassador to the UK. The Nobel committee named him a laureate before his death in 1971.
